It has finally happened. Social media has crept its way into the modern wedding process. David's Bridal found that the 2013 bride will plan, chronicle and culminate all her wedding details with the help of social media, ranging from Pinterest to Facebook to Skype.
The social network of wedding planning
Soon-to-be brides are using social networking to plan their weddings even more today than ever before. David's Bridal found that 59 percent of brides say online resources like Pinterest, Facebook and blogs are the best places to find wedding inspiration. We'd have to agree. With Pinterest's cute artistic ideas, it's no wonder that brides are using it as a modern day "wedding binder" for their own wedding plans.
If the dress fits, share it
When it comes to trying on wedding dresses, David's Bridal found that 68 percent of brides use technology during their fittings. From texting pictures to family, to posting videos on a social media site, brides are sharing even more of this intimate moment with others. We think it's a great way to get opinions from friends and family to help pick the perfect dress.
Invite as many guests as you want... from anywhere in the world!
Skype and other websites such as I Do Stream and Marry Me Live have made it possible to invite as many guests as you would like from the comfort of their own homes. Guests who physically can't make it to the special occasion are now able to watch the ceremony live with the click of a button. Nearly half of all respondents from the David's Bridal survey said they would consider "Skype-ing" their wedding. This is a great way to share your big day with everyone!
Making it "Facebook official"
Up 11 percent from 2011, 59 percent of brides are changing their Facebook relationship status to "married" minutes, even up to a whole day before they've walked down the aisle. Brides apparently can't wait to show their "friends" that they've gotten hitched!
The "handbook" for social media use
Fifty-six percent of newlywed women say there should be rules for social media use on the wedding day. Here are a few that we've come up with:
- Bridesmaids are forbidden to snap and upload photos of the bride donning her dress before the ceremony.
- The bride and groom must be the first to post pictures of their wedding to any social media site.
- Photos that are posted on certain sites should be viewable and shared with the bride and groom.
- If you must tweet, post or upload, do so quickly in order to enjoy the whole experience.
A modern way to share pictures with other guests is by the use of hashtags on Instagram and Twitter. By establishing a special hashtag that everyone can include with their photo or tweet, it creates a group of fun photos taken by your guests for everyone to enjoy.
